The easiest time to improve next year’s decorating is while packing away this year’s display. A few notes, clear labels and careful sorting can save you from opening every box to find one favorite piece.
Sort by material and destination
Separate fragile glass, sturdy ornaments, textiles and hanging accessories. Keep protective packaging where it is useful, and follow any storage instructions provided with the item. Avoid packing a delicate object underneath heavier decorations just because they share a color.
Photograph arrangements you liked
Take a quick photo before dismantling a shelf, tree or table display. Store the photo with a note about quantities, colors and any missing pieces. Next year, you can repeat a successful arrangement or adapt it without starting from scratch.
Label for retrieval
“Tree ornaments—red and gold” is more useful than “Christmas box 3.” Put the pieces you use first near the top or in an accessible container. Keep hooks and ribbons in clearly labeled compartments rather than loose among fragile items.
Make a repair and replacement list
Set aside damaged pieces for assessment rather than returning them to the main box. Record what actually needs replacing; this gives future shopping a purpose and helps prevent duplicates.
