A Simple Three-Color Plan for a Festive Home

A Simple Three-Color Plan for a Festive Home

A home can feel festive without decorating every surface. Choosing three colors first gives separate purchases a sense of belonging together. Start with one main color, one supporting color and a small amount of sparkle or contrast.

Build around what you already own

Lay out your existing ornaments, ribbons and textiles before shopping. Notice which colors repeat. Evergreen, burgundy and warm gold create a traditional mood; cream, forest green and natural wood feel quieter. These are starting points, not rules. A favorite ornament can set the whole palette.

Repeat the palette in three places

Pick a focal point, such as the tree, then echo its colors on a mantel or shelf and near the entry. Repetition creates continuity without requiring identical objects. A ribbon, a bowl of ornaments and a small arrangement can share colors while having different textures.

Leave room for everyday life

Keep serving space, doorways and frequently used surfaces clear. Try an arrangement before adding more: step back, take a photograph and remove one item if the display feels crowded. In a small room, fewer larger accents can be easier to read than many tiny pieces.

Write a short gap list before buying—perhaps ribbon and two statement ornaments—rather than restarting your collection. Our decorations and ornaments can help you finish a scheme around pieces you already love.
